In 2007 the Forum will be a three day event with Day 1 devoted to a Workshop, Days 2 and 3 split into three technology sessions, preceded by a Keynote with an introduction from the Conference Chairman. Each Session will include technical papers with ample time for a forum with questions to the speakers. The Sessions are:-

  • Applications
  • Technology
  • Infrastructure

The Keynote will set the scene for the entire two day conference.

Workshop

Day 1 - 10:30 - 5:00 am

The preliminary workshop enables background issues and new developments in key components of time and frequency to be delivered in a tutorial type atmosphere.

The Workshop provides a platform to deliver knowledge based presentations on the latest technical direction in the industry and an opportunity for speakers who are recognised internationally to share their insight into current and future technical sync-related challenges facing the telecom industry.

Workshop Sub-Committee

  • Chris Farrow
  • Jean-Loup Ferrant
  • Bob Cockshott
  • Silvana Rodrigues
  • Marc Weiss

Preliminary Outline - Focus on underlying technologies

  • Part 1 – Traditional topics e.g. Oscillators, phase locked loops, Atomic Standards, GPS, SDH, PDH, TIE, MTIE, TDEV
  • Part II – New technologies and applications e.g. packet networks, latency, packet delay variation, QoS, IP-MPLS, Ethernet (NGN) network architecture & sync options, protection mechanisms.

Papers Driven Forum

Days 2 & 3 - 9:00 to 5:00

The two day papers driven Forum immediately following the Workshop encourages papers which examine the issues and application of sync in telecom networks. Papers on future challenges regarding the transport of sync and effect of poor sync on applications as telecom transmission techniques evolve are particularly encouraged.

Papers with a commercial spin are actively discouraged. All papers will be peer reviewed by the session sub-committees who will provide advice and guidance on content to avoid overlap with other presenters.

The Forum is split into three Sessions, preceded by the Introduction and Keynote. Each Session will include technical papers with ample time for a forum with questions to the speakers. The Sessions are:-

  • Introduction, Keynote
  • Applications
  • Technology
  • Infrastructure

The Keynote will set the scene for the entire two day conference. All papers should be encouraged to reflect this theme within their presentations.

Peer review will also establish contenders for a “Best Paper” award.

A Synopsis - typically 200 words with no diagrams or pictures will be published on web site before the event.

Day 2

Session 1 – Introduction and Keynote

This Session sets the scene for the two day Forum.

Session 1 Sub-Committee

  • Charles Curry
  • Mike Gilson
  • Conference Introduction – Conference Chairman
  • Keynote Speaker - someone from a deep technological, Government or Standards background who can comment of the future direction of telecom services and the impact that poor sync may have on Quality of Service

Session 2 – APPLICATIONS

This session will examine applications that require timing from the network and whose operation and quality can be impacted by poor timing.

Session 2 Sub-Committee

  • Michael Mayer
  • Sébastien Jobert
  • Martin Kingston
  • Laurent Montini
  • Ghani Abbas

This Session will examine different telecom applications that need time and timing, their susceptibility to poor sync or their ability to transport sync to connected applications. Papers will be invited addressing the following topics.

Vertical Topics - IPTV, WiMAX, VOD, VoIP, tdTV, TETRA, GSM, GSM-R, UMTS, W-CDMA, LTE, WiFi, , Cable TV, Traditional applications over Ethernet, SLAs for packet delay, QoS, Input from Other Standards organisations (3GPP RAN, IETF, ITU, IEEE)

Cross Cutting Themes - QoS, Evolution, Testing.

A Panel Session will wrap up with speakers participating.

Day 2/3

Session 3 - TECHNOLOGY

This session will examine the different time & timing technologies & the technologies which enable time and timing to be transported effectively across a telecom network

Session 3 Sub-Committee

  • Dave Tonks
  • Dave O’Connor
  • Dominik Schneuwly
  • Charlie Ferreira
  • Stefano Ruffini
  • Carlos Moneró
  • Charles Curry

Vertical Topics – Standards, Input from other Standards Groups (IETF, IEEE, ITU), New Sync Distribution technologies, Other emerging technologies, SDH, SONET, Ethernet, PBB-TE, Sync techniques for circuit Emulation, IEEE 1588 PTP, ITU - Synchronous Ethernet, IETF - NTP, DOCSIS DTi, PRS technology such as GNSS, Loran, Oscillator Technology, Technologies that support synchronisation distribution, Network timing, PON, DSL , Service Timing, Adaptive Clocking.

Cross Cutting Themes – QoS, Evolution, Testing.

A Panel Session will wrap up with all speakers participating.

Day 3

Session 4 – INFRASTRUCTURE

This session will examine the evolution of infrastructure and network architecture as telecom networks evolve from traditional constant bit-rate transmission into packet based transport, the challenges, the hardware, the enablers and the impact on time and timing elements and transmission.

Session 4 Sub-Committee

  • Phil Larke
  • Phil Mann
  • Ian Wright
  • Mike Gilson

Vertical Topics – Operational Aspects, Network Architecture, Latest Hardware Solutions, Testing and Type Approval, Network Case Studies, Evolution to NGN, Local Loop Unbundling, Mobile/Terrestrial Interface, time and timing , Network quality, Management.

Cross Cutting Themes – QoS, Evolution, Testing.

A Panel Session will wrap up with all speakers participating.

Social and Networking Events

It is envisaged that an "icebreaker" networking event would follow the Workshop on the first evening. This could be a technically interesting venue e.g. a museum or other suitably appropriate venue. Past venues have included the Royal Observatory, Greenwich, a tour of Young’s brewery, a flight on the London Eye and a reception in the Strahov Library in Prague.

The 2007 venue is set as the Royal Observatory, Greenwich.

Visit the Royal Observatory website here»

A speaker dinner would follow the first day of papers sessions on the second evening. The dinner will also include an annual awards ceremony.
